I decided to read this after watching the very entertaining Secretary. Gaitskill herself proves to be interesting - she used to be a stripper. It's no wonder that her protagonists are prostitutes and other specimens on the periphery of middle class society. Don't come to this book expecting sex, sex and nothing else. Sure it has its episodes but they're there to be appreciated in conjunction with the themes of depravity, loneliness and introspection.
